August 2025

We were delighted to host our first corporate volunteer group in July 2025 when a group of employees from Imerys spent the day with our grounds maintenance team helping to clear invasive vegetation, as part of a new ongoing partnership supporting our work.

The team were given the task of clearing an area of thick rhododendron which had been growing for well over 50 years and had restricted access to a path, preventing local plants and wildlife from thriving in the area.

The museum has over 24 acres of land to manage, and Imerys employees are being invited to support via a number of upcoming volunteering days, as well as get involved in other aspects of volunteering.

Andy Trudgian, maintenance lead at Wheal Martyn, said: “We are so grateful for the support for Imerys and look forward to hosting more staff on upcoming volunteer days. With all the land we have here, you can imagine that takes a lot of work to maintain. If you are interested in donating your time please do get in touch to add to our growing list of 70-plus volunteers."

The introduction of corporate volunteering at Wheal Martyn forms part of our Readying Wheal Martyn for the Future project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Through this project, a Volunteer Development Officer is employed to develop our volunteer workforce, providing new opportunities for volunteering and to expand the workforce to help the charity care the historic site and museum collection, as well as assist with delivering great experiences for our visitors and the local community.
