This summer we are offering an Arts Award Programme for young people age 11+ to complete either their Bronze or Silver Arts Award with Wheal Martyn

Participants will take part in a series of workshop days where they will:

  • get creative and take part in arts activities
  • explore the work of an artist and gain an insight into the professional arts world
  • experience an arts event
  • develop creative and communication skills, working in a team and presenting to others

How will the Programme be delivered?

Our experienced Education Officer, who is an Arts Award Adviser, will deliver the workshop days. Participants will need to attend all the dates for their chosen level of Arts Award in order to complete the necessary activities.  There will be some additional tasks to undertake at home, to support the core activities delivered in the workshops, including building the Arts Award Portfolio..

The dates for the Bronze and Silver Workshop Days consist of 4 sessions for Bronze or 5 for Silver. Participants will need to attend all dates for their chosen award level. The dates are as follows:

Thursday 25 June - 10.00 - 2.30pm Bronze/Silver: Introduction, Review an Exhibition & art workshop

Thursday 2 July - 10.00 - 2.30pm Bronze/Silver: Art Inspiration - a workshop with artist Selina Mancey

Wednesday 8 July - 10.00 - 2.30pm Bronze/Silver: Art Workshop & Planning a Skill Share

Thursday 16 July - 10.00 - 3.30pm Bronze/Silver: Skills Share / Art Challenge

Tuesday 21 July - 10.30 - 2.30pm Silver Only: Planning a Leadership Project

September/October - 2 additional dates for Silver Only to plan and deliver their Leadership Project

For each session, lunch will be from 12.15 to 1.00pm approx. We ask that young people have a responsible adult with them for the lunch break.

Assessment

At the end of the course, participants will need to submit a completed Portfolio of Evidence in a digital format. This could be as a scanned copy of a paper notebook; a WORD or PDF document; a PowerPoint or even a website! Help and support will be provided throughout the Programme to ensure that appropriate evidence is gathered for the portfolio.  Portfolios will then be assessed against the Arts Award Criteria and then sent for moderation.  This process can take several months, but once completed, successful participants will receive their award certificate.

Support and Benefits

The Arts Award Programme offers young people the opportunity to build their independence; to work well in small teams with their peers; and to develop communication and presentation skills. All of this alongside the chance to build on and try new skills in visual arts!

During the workshop sessions at Wheal Martyn, parents/carers can leave the young people under the supervision of the Education Officer. Parents/carers will need to make their own arrangements to supervise the young people for the lunch break on each workshop date.

The young people will need to undertake some work at home and in their own time. This independent work will require self-motivation and organisation, as well as some IT skills to complete an arts portfolio in a digital format (e.g. Word, PDF, Google Sites or similar).

A bit more about our Arts Award Programme

Who is this for? Young people aged approximately 11 to 18 years.

Arts Award is a qualification that supports young people to grow as artists and arts leaders, inspiring them to connect with and take part in the wider arts world through taking challenges in an art form - from fashion to digital art, pottery to poetry.

Bronze Arts Award is a Level 1 Award in the Arts in the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), designed for ages 11 and above.

Silver Arts Award is a Level 2 Award in the Arts in the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), designed for ages 14 and above, but open to age 11+.
